Refresher: Foreign Interference & Transnational Repression

1. FI targets vulnerable actors across partisan lines, it’s not about ideologies
2. Diaspora/dissidents collect & submit evidence to the police but almost 0 cases proceed to court, while being gaslit TNR isn’t real
3. FI is not always a smoking gun because of proxies/affiliates; FI is not strictly money in exchange for services
4. Blurring of diplomatic norms & FI. Diplomats engaged in covert coercive & clandestine activities should not be permitted to hold diplomatic credentials.
5. Policing does not solve FI. Policing does not protect diaspora & dissident (last I checked murder & intimidation is already outlawed but didn’t stop TNR). Policing ops will only further alienate racialized communities at risk (as demonstrated in the recent MTL Chinatown ops)
6. Growing resilience to FI requires investment, culturally informed & whole of society approach. We need to *actually* educate the WHOLE CDN SOCIETY about FI & TNR. Diaspora/dissidents’ lived experiences should inform policy narratives, not the other way around.
